Despite a difficult market situation stemming from an economic downturn, EXPOPOWER 2009, held in Poznań on 19-21 May, attracted 207 exhibitors and represented companies - 12 percent more than in 2008. The offers were presented by the leading representatives of the power and electrical engineering sectors, including: ABB, Apator, Elektrobudowa, Elektromontaż Poznań, Elektromontaż Lublin, ENEA, Kompania Węglowa, Merazet, Philips, PKP Energetyka, Siemens, Tele-fonika Kable, Weidmüller and ZPUE. Companies from 6 countries (Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Spain and USA) participated in the show.

A record turnout
9,673 people visited the expositions of EXPOPOWER exhibitors on three trade fair days. This is three times more than during the second edition of the trade fair. The admission to the fair was free of charge following online registration or registration at the entrance.

Auspices
EXPOPOWER 2009 was held under the honorary auspices of Mr. Andrzej Czerwiński, MP, Chairman of the Parliamentary Group for Energy Issues.  The show was also held under the auspices of the Ministry of Economy and industrial organisations: Economic Chamber HEAT ENGINEERING, the Polish Chamber of Power Industry and Environment Protection, the Polish Chamber of Railway Devices and Services, the Polish Power Transmission and Distribution Association, the Association of Polish Electrical Engineers and the Economic Society Polish Power Plants.

Doing business in excellent conditions
EXPOPOWER exhibitors and visitors enjoyed comfortable conditions for effective marketing communication. The exposition of EXPOPOWER was located in the newest air-conditioned complex of exhibition halls, with utilities and Internet connection, linked through a glass passage. EXPOPOWER participants could also use the infrastructure of our modern congress centre.

What's new on the market?
Numerous new products presented at stands were the greatest attraction for professionals visiting the fair. The trade show is an excellent opportunity to see the latest products and technologies launched on the Polish market. EXPOPOWER exhibitors presented tens of new solutions. Stands of exhibitors who registered their new offers had special signs.

Conferences and meetings
The EXPOPOWER expositions were enriched by an attractive programme of events prepared by Międzynarodowe Targi Poznańskie in cooperation with industrial partners.

The Association of Polish Electrical Engineers prepared two conferences for EXPOPOWER participants. A scientific and technical conference entitled "Power industry in construction sector" was organised by the Association in cooperation with the Wielkopolska District Chamber of Civil Engineers (WOIIB). This event focused on two very interesting topics: energy assessment of buildings (the current legal status and implementation of regulations), as well as takeover and periodical measurements of LV installations.

On the second trade fair day, the Association organised the 7th Scientific and Technical Conference in the series: "Low, medium and high voltage electrical installations" in cooperation with WOIIB, ABB, DEHN Polska and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering - Poznań University of Technology. The lead theme of this year's conference was: "Electrical switching devices". The conference was a forum for exchanging experiences among centres conducting research, construction works, design and implementation in the area of switching devices and tools.

The Polish Power Transmission and Distribution Association (PTPiREE) organised a conference entitled: "The need for the development of energy grids. Legal and environmental conditions". Prof. Jerzy Buzek, former Polish Prime Minister and currently an MEP was a special guest of this event. The conference participants tried to answer the question how to change the Polish power sector to bring benefits to the clients and the environment. The discussions pertained to energy as a determiner of the human civilisational development, investment needs of the grid infrastructure, legal problems related to the development of the transmission and distribution infrastructure - current barriers and potential solutions.

Additionally, PTPiREE organised a meeting of managing directors of energy plants from all of Poland during the fair.

The Chamber of Power Industry and Environment Protection prepared an international conference devoted to "Co-burning of biomass in Central Eastern Europe. Promoting know-how in the area of co-burning technologies and biomass generation". The event was organised in cooperation with Ecofys Poland (the coordinator of COFITECK project) and the Economic Society Polish Power Plants that represents the Polish electrical engineering sector in the project. Key issues for the development of technologies for co-burning biomass and fossil fuels were presented at the conference.  The current situation in the area of co-burning in Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia and Romania was also discussed. Examples of co-burning projects from Poland and Germany were presented.

A series of technical seminars held under the theme "ABB Days" was very popular among trade fair visitors. It focused on the most current issues for the Polish power sector. The seminar topics were as follows: "Unit transformers for parallel work and single-phase transformers", "New solutions in HV station terminals and steering systems", "HVDC technology for energy bridges" and "Dynamic compensation systems for wind farms and FACTS".

Galmar Marciniak s.j. organised a conference on "Revolution in grounding and lightning protection".

The fifth final of the nationwide educational campaign "Safer with electricity" was held on the last day. It involved hundreds of kids and youngsters from all over Poland. The "Safer with electricity" programme was initiated by the Polish Power Transmission and Distribution Association and energy companies in 2002. The programme aims at increasing the awareness about the appropriate use of electrical appliances among children and youths and at promoting safe and efficient consumption of electricity.
